  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour Measured accurately for best results.
  • 1 cup Warm Water About 110°F for activating yeast.
  • 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast Ensure yeast is fresh.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Use high-quality extra virgin for best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor and strengthens dough.

Filling Ingredients

  • 1-2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Classic filling choice.
  • 1-2 cups Vegetables Chopped finely; options include bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach.
  • 1 cup Cooked Protein Optional; can use chicken, turkey, or beef.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano For flavor enhancement.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil For flavor enhancement.

Instructions
 

  • 1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well.
  • 3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until the dough begins to come together.
  • 4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • 5. Form the dough into a ball, place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • 6. Prepare the filling by mixing shredded cheese, vegetables, cooked protein, and spices in a bowl.
  • 7. Punch down the risen dough, divide into 4 portions, and roll each into a circle about ¼ inch thick.
  • 8. Place filling on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border. Fold the other half over and seal the edges.
  • 9. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • 10. Brush calzones with olive oil and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • 11. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm with marinara sauce.

Notes

Leftover calzones can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
