  • 12 ounces Root Beer Choose a high-quality root beer for best results.
  • 1 medium Onion Sliced thinly.
  • 2-3 cloves Garlic Minced.
  • 2 tablespoons Mustard Yellow or spicier variety, to taste.
  • 1-2 tablespoons Olive Oil For sautéing onions and garlic.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt To taste.

Instructions
 

  • Gather all your ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Push the onions and garlic to the side and add the bratwurst links. Sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Pour in the root beer and bring to a simmer, deglazing the pan.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until bratwurst are cooked through.
  • Check the internal temperature of the bratwurst; they should reach at least 160°F. If not, continue simmering.
  • Remove bratwurst and increase heat to medium-high to reduce the root beer sauce for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  • Return bratwurst to the skillet, toss in the sauce, and add mustard if desired.
  • Serve each brat in a toasted bun, drizzled with the thickened root beer sauce.
  • Garnish with sautéed onions, pickles, or additional mustard as desired.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
