Instructions
1. Proof the yeast by combining warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well, add melted butter, proofed yeast mixture, and egg. Mix until a rough dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
5. Prepare the filling by mixing chopped apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl.
6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
7. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle the apple mixture evenly over the dough.
8. Cut the dough into strips, stack them, and cut into squares.
9. Place the stacked squares in a greased loaf pan, standing them upright.
10. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
11. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
12. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
13. Serve warm or at room temperature.
