Instructions
 

  • 1. Proof the yeast by combining warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • 2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well, add melted butter, proofed yeast mixture, and egg. Mix until a rough dough forms.
  • 3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • 4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  • 5. Prepare the filling by mixing chopped apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  • 6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • 7. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle the apple mixture evenly over the dough.
  • 8. Cut the dough into strips, stack them, and cut into squares.
  • 9. Place the stacked squares in a greased loaf pan, standing them upright.
  • 10. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
  • 11. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  • 12. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • 13. Serve warm or at room temperature.
