Ingredients Group Label

  • 1 pound Ground Beef Use 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio for best flavor and juiciness.
  • 2 medium Yellow Onions Sliced thinly and caramelized.
  • 4 slices Swiss Cheese For creamy melt.
  • 4 slices Cheddar Cheese Adds a sharp note.
  • 8 slices Hearty Bread Such as rye or sourdough.
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter For cooking and toasting.
  • to taste Salt Essential seasoning.
  • to taste Pepper Essential seasoning.
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon Mustard Optional for added tanginess.

Instructions

  • Begin by caramelizing the onions. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally, allowing the onions to cook down for about 20-25 minutes until they are soft and golden brown.
  • While the onions are caramelizing, prepare the beef patties. In a mixing bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, about ¾ inch thick.
  • Once the onions are caramelized, remove them from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, melt another tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties, cooking them for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness.
  • During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt.
  • While the patties are finishing, prepare the bread. In a separate pan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Toast four slices of bread until golden brown.
  • Assemble the sandwich by placing one cheese-topped patty on a slice of toasted bread. Add a generous spoonful of caramelized onions on top, then place another patty on top of the onions, followed by another slice of cheese. Top with a second slice of toasted bread.
  • Repeat the assembly process for the second sandwich. Once both sandwiches are assembled, return them to the skillet over medium heat. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute before slicing them in half.
  • Serve your Classic Double Decker French Onion Patty Melt warm, and enjoy!

Notes

For variations, consider adding jalapeños for spice, using ground turkey for a lighter option, or experimenting with different cheeses.
