Ingredients

Chocolate Rolls

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour This is the base for your rolls, giving them structure and a soft, fluffy texture.
  • 1 cup Warm milk (110°F to 115°F) helps activate the yeast.
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons) essential for leavening.
  • ½ cup Granulated sugar Adds sweetness and helps activate the yeast.
  • ½ cup Unsweetened cocoa powder Provides the rich chocolate flavor.
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter (melted) adds richness and moisture.
  • 2 large Eggs Bind the ingredients together.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Enhances the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Balances sweetness and enhances flavor.

Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 ounces Cream cheese (softened) provides creaminess and flavor.
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter (softened) adds richness.
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar Sweetens the frosting.
  • ½ cup Fresh strawberries (pureed) infuses frosting with fruity flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Enhances flavor profile.

Instructions

  • 1. Start by activating the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk with the active dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Mix well to ensure the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • 3. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and add the activated yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  • 4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • 5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • 6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, approximately ¼ inch thick.
  • 7. Spread a thin layer of softened butter over the rolled-out dough.
  • 8. In a bowl, prepare the filling by mixing together a combination of cocoa powder and sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
  • 9. Carefully roll the dough from one long side to the other to form a tight log. Pinch the seams to seal them.
  • 10. Cut the rolled dough into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife or a serrated edge cutter. Place the cut rolls into a greased baking pan.
  • 11. Cover the pan with a kitchen towel and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes until they have puffed up.
  • 12. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • 13. While the rolls are baking, prepare the strawberry cream cheese frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy and smooth.
  • 14. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated. Then, add the strawberry puree and vanilla extract, mixing until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • 15. Once the rolls are baked, allow them to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • 16. Once the rolls are completely cooled, generously spread the strawberry cream cheese frosting on top of each roll.
  • 17. Serve the rolls at room temperature or slightly warmed. Enjoy!

Notes

Consider adding spices such as cinnamon or a dash of espresso powder to the dough for an extra layer of flavor.
