  • 12 ounces cheese tortellini Choose a quality brand for the best flavor.
  • 2 cups marinara sauce Opt for homemade or your favorite store-bought variety.
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese Adds richness and moisture to the dish.
  • 1 large egg Helps bind the ricotta cheese.
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Provides a gooey, cheesy topping.
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Adds depth and enhances the cheesy goodness.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning A blend of dried herbs for flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Adds subtle garlic flavor.
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential for seasoning.
  • as needed fresh basil for garnish Optional for garnish.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large pot, cook the tortellini according to the package instructions until al dente, about 3-5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  • Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Layer half of the cooked tortellini over the marinara sauce, then dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the tortellini.
  • Sprinkle one cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the ricotta layer, followed by a third of the remaining marinara sauce.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining tortellini, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and marinara sauce. Finish with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

This dish can be customized with vegetable add-ins, different cheeses, or proteins. It can also be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator.
