Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or line it with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter and granulated sugar. Beat until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Add the egg to the mixture and mix until fully incorporated.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
Divide the dough into two portions: one for the bottom crust and one for the topping. Press the larger portion into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
In a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Toss until evenly coated.
Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust.
Crumble the reserved dough over the top of the apple filling.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Allow to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before slicing into squares.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with ice cream or whipped cream.
